The Philippines with children
Fiestas with street parades and food on every corner, a theme park day an hour from the capital, waterfalls to swim in and a whale shark to meet before breakfast. The Philippines with a family is easy in the ways that matter, because the country itself is organised around extended family.
Fiesta days are the family event par excellence: street parades in the morning, church and family lunch at midday, fairground rides and food stalls after dark, and children expected at all of it. Theme park and museum days anchor a Manila stay: Enchanted Kingdom for the rides, Manila Ocean Park and the Mind Museum for the air-conditioned hours. Water days carry the island trips: island hopping off Mactan, the Kawasan river in Cebu, the beaches an hour or two from every event city. The festive season gives the longest evenings of the year: lantern displays, night markets and the Christmas parks, outdoors and early enough for small children.
Malls are the family's infrastructure here: air-conditioning, food courts, baggage counters, cinemas and a supermarket in every big one, open to 9 or 10pm, which solves most problems a travelling family meets. Ride-hailing beats traffic stress with children in tow; book the larger car size for airport runs. The heat is the real planning constraint from March to June: do the outdoor sights early, rest or swim through the middle of the day, and go out again for the evening. In the rainy months, keep one spare day in any island itinerary, because ferries and flights are the first things storms cancel.
The days out below book up in season or reward an early start; each card explains how that attraction is really booked.
