Christmas and New Year in the Philippines: the complete guide

The longest Christmas season in the world, planned end to end: Simbang Gabi from 16 December, the giant lanterns of San Fernando, three Nutcrackers, Disney On Ice in Cebu and Manila, and the countdowns that close the year.

The Philippine Christmas starts in September and runs past New Year: Simbang Gabi, the giant lanterns of San Fernando, the concert season, and the Grand Countdown. This guide takes the season in order, from the first dawn masses to the last firework, with the listings that carry each part of it.

The Philippines does Christmas longer than anywhere else on earth: the carols start when the months turn to 'ber', the malls dress up in September, and the season proper runs through December to the New Year countdowns and into the January fiestas. Our season overview sets out how the calendar stacks up across the quarter. This guide is the practical companion: what happens, in what order, where to be for each part of it, and what to book first.

Simbang Gabi: the nine dawns, 16 to 24 December

Simbang Gabi, the nine dawn masses that run from Wednesday 16 to Thursday 24 December, sets the rhythm of the season in every parish in the country. The masses start before sunrise, at 4am or 5am in most churches, with anticipated evening versions the night before for those who cannot face the alarm. In Manila the weight of tradition sits in Intramuros, at Manila Cathedral and at San Agustin, the oldest stone church in the country, and the walk between them through the walled city in the dark is the season at its most itself. Outside the church doors afterwards, vendors sell bibingka, rice cakes cooked in clay pots over coals, and puto bumbong, the purple steamed rice served with butter and coconut: breakfast is part of the ritual. Completing all nine dawns is said to grant a wish, which is why the last mass, on the 24th, is the fullest of the run.

The giant lanterns of San Fernando

An hour and a half north of Manila, the City of San Fernando in Pampanga calls itself the Christmas Capital of the Philippines, and the claim rests on one night: the Ligligan Parul, the Giant Lantern Festival, when the city's barangays compete with lanterns up to 20 feet across, built by master lantern makers and lit by thousands of bulbs choreographed to music. One honest note, because it decides how you plan: as this guide is written in early November, the city has not yet announced the 2026 competition night. Recent editions have fallen on a Saturday in mid December, the 2025 edition on Saturday 13 December at Robinsons Starmills, and the lanterns stay on display at the ground into the New Year, so a trip in the second half of December sees them lit whether or not you catch the contest itself. Our Giant Lantern Festival guide tracks the announcement as it lands, and it is the page to check before you fix a hotel night around the competition.

Manila lights up

The capital's own light season centres on Makati. Ayala Land's Festival of Lights at Ayala Triangle Gardens, with the lit avenues around it, is the fixture office workers and families build December evenings around. Ayala has not announced the 2026 dates as this guide is written: last year the Makati lights were lit on 13 November and stayed on until 11 January, running along Ayala Avenue and into the Triangle Gardens each evening, and the pattern is the reasonable expectation for this year. Bonifacio Global City and the bayfront malls run their own trees and displays through the same weeks, and the honest planning advice is simple: any Metro Manila base in December is within a short ride of a lit district, and the displays are free.

The December stage

The concert and ballet season peaks in the same fortnight as Simbang Gabi. This year three Nutcrackers play Metro Manila in nine days: Ballet Manila with Steps Dance Studio at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati and Ballet Philippines at The Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque over the weekend of 11 to 13 December, then the touring Saint Petersburg National Ballet Theatre at Newport on 18 and 19 December. Jose Mari Chan, the singer whose name is practically a synonym for Philippine Christmas, headlines A Christmas with the OPM Icons at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Saturday 12 December, tickets from ₱3,500; that listing is marked expected on this calendar, so check the event page for the confirmed on-sale before you travel for it. The Philippine Philharmonic's Modulatio Concert IV plays Circuit Makati on 4 December, and the family alternative to ballet is Home Alone in Concert at Solaire on 19 and 20 December, the film with a live orchestral score.

For families: Disney On Ice, twice

Disney On Ice does Cebu first this year: Let's Dance! opens at SM Seaside Cebu Arena from 28 November to 6 December, then takes the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila from Friday 18 December to Sunday 3 January, straight through the holidays. Tickets for both runs start from ₱300 on our listings. It is the season's easiest family booking, and the Manila run is the rare December fixture that still has room after Christmas Day itself. If the ice show sells out your dates, Manila Ocean Park on the bay is the standing family fallback, open through the season.

New Year's Eve

The countdowns concentrate where the resorts and ballrooms are. Newport World Resorts' Grand Countdown to 2027 takes over the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay on Thursday 31 December, confirmed on the resort's own events page, and Solaire answers across the bay side with VOIC3S, a New Year's Eve special at The Theatre at Solaire the same night. Our New Year's Eve in Metro Manila guide walks through the night district by district. Fireworks over Manila Bay close the year, and then the season hands over to January: Sinulog in Cebu, Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang in successive weekends, which is where the January triangle begins.

Where to stay

For the stage season and the Makati lights, stay in Makati: the Samsung Performing Arts Theater, the Triangle Gardens and the Simbang Gabi churches of the business district are all in walking range, and Newport is a short ride south. For Disney On Ice, the Grand Countdown and the bay fireworks, stay in Pasay, in the Mall of Asia and Newport corridor, where the season's two biggest rooms sit minutes apart.

Planning notes

December is peak season in every direction: domestic flights sell out around the holiday weeks, Manila's event districts book up, and the traffic reaches its annual worst in the fortnight before Christmas. Book flights and rooms early, keep airport transfers generous, let the December calendar set the shape of the trip, and if the lanterns are your reason for coming, hold the San Fernando night flexible until the city announces it.
