New Year beyond Manila: Cebu and Boracay countdowns
Thursday 31 December 2026 does not belong to Manila alone. Cebu City counts down on its waterfront, at the NUSTAR Boardwalk on the South Road Properties and in the Mactan resort hotels across the channel, while Boracay does the night the post rehabilitation way, inside its bars and resorts, under the island's visitor cap and accredited hotel rules. Both trips, the confirmed anchors, the honest gaps, and how to travel between Christmas and New Year without the journey eating the holiday.
Our New Year in Metro Manila guide plans the capital's night district by district. This is its companion for everyone spending Thursday 31 December 2026 somewhere better: Cebu, where the countdown sits on a waterfront built for it and the country's biggest festival is a fortnight away, and Boracay, where the most famous beach in the Philippines counts down under rules that changed the island for good in 2018. Two very different midnights. Choose by the kind of night you want, then book in the order this guide ends with, because the week between Christmas and New Year is the hardest travel week in the Philippine calendar.

Cebu City: the waterfront countdown
Cebu's confirmed anchor for 2026/27 is on the water. NUSTAR Resort, on Kawit Island at the South Road Properties, turns its Boardwalk into Beads and Beats, a New Orleans inspired street festival for New Year's Eve, with entertainment zones, roaming performers, live DJs and brass bands building to the midnight countdown. It is the same Boardwalk that hosted last year's Carnaval de Luz celebration, and the resort's own page is already billing this year's edition as the city's most vibrant New Year's Eve destination. The format suits Cebu: outdoors, on the harbour, in a complex with its own hotels above it, so the night can end with a lift ride rather than a taxi queue. Tickets and packages are sold by the resort through its own channels; there is no affiliate route for them and this guide invents none.
Across the channel on Mactan, the resort strip runs the hotel version of the night. Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel in Buyong has published its 2027 countdown, Street Food of Asia, a dinner event from 10pm on 31 December built around the street food of five countries, with live entertainment and fireworks. The other Mactan resorts run their own gala dinners and countdown parties on the same pattern, several of them compulsory for guests staying over the night itself, so read the fine print of a Mactan booking for that week before you pay for it: at some resorts the gala is not an optional extra. In the city proper, the big uptown hotels around Cebu Business Park and Lahug run ballroom countdowns of their own. Their 2026/27 programmes were still to be published when this guide was drafted, so treat the pattern as reliable and the lineups as December news, and set an alert rather than booking around a name you have only seen rumoured.

Cebu in the daytime, and the festival a fortnight later
A Cebu New Year trip has a second act, and it is the reason to stay past 1 January if you can. Sinulog, the festival of the Santo Niño and the biggest date in Cebu's year, falls on Sunday 17 January 2027, the third Sunday of the month, with its fluvial procession on the Saturday before. A trip that starts at the countdown and ends at Sinulog is two celebrations with a quiet island week in between, and the hotels price accordingly, so decide which festival you are really travelling for before you book the room.
The days themselves are easy. The old city holds the Spanish core in a short walk: Magellan's Cross, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño and Fort San Pedro, with lechon for lunch, because Cebu's roast pig is the one other cities concede. The half day historical and street food tour strings exactly that walk together with a guide and the eating built in.

For the full day out, go south. The canyoneering run through the Badian river to Kawasan Falls, turquoise pools, cliff jumps and a walk out under the falls themselves, is Cebu's signature adventure day, and the first week of January, once the holiday crowds thin, is a fine time to do it.

Boracay: the countdown, post rehabilitation
Boracay still counts down. What it no longer does is party on the sand. The island that closed for six months in 2018 for environmental rehabilitation reopened with a rulebook that shapes New Year's Eve directly: no drinking, eating or smoking on White Beach itself, no sound systems, bonfires or fire dancing on the open sand, and the celebrations moved indoors, into the licensed bars, restaurants and resorts along the beach path. Midnight on White Beach is now a walk on a clear, wide beach between lit up venues, with the countdowns coming from the resorts and bars rather than from a stage on the sand. Regulars who knew the old LaBoracay era should recalibrate, not mourn: the beach at midnight, clean and unbuilt under the 30 metre easement, is a better place than the one the closure shut down.
The rules that matter more for planning are the entry rules. Boracay runs on a carrying capacity of around 19,200 visitors on the island at any one time, with arrivals managed at roughly 6,405 tourist entries a day, and you cannot board the boat at Caticlan without a confirmed booking at a Department of Tourism accredited hotel. In the Christmas to New Year week, the most contested week of the island's year, that cap is not a technicality: it is the reason the accredited rooms sell out and the reason a last minute Boracay New Year is close to a contradiction. Book the accredited room first, before the flights, because the room is the entry ticket. Station 1, at the quiet northern end of White Beach, is the composed version of the night; Station 2, around D'Mall, is where the bars and the crowd concentrate; Station 3 is the calmer, cheaper south. Pick by how much of the countdown you want on your doorstep.

Give the island its days, not just its night. The island hopping circuit, out to Crocodile Island for snorkelling, Puka Beach for the quieter sand and a grilled buffet lunch at Tambisaan, is the daylight half of a Boracay stay, and in the amihan season the water on the White Beach side is at its calmest and clearest.

Getting there between Christmas and New Year
Cebu is the easy arrival: Mactan Cebu International Airport takes direct flights from Manila and from across the region, and the city is a bridge crossing from the airport island. Boracay is a chain, and every link needs booking in that week: a flight to Caticlan, the small airport a short ride from the jetty port, or to Kalibo, the bigger airport about two hours away by road; then the port formalities, where your accredited hotel confirmation is checked; then the short boat crossing. Fly to Caticlan if the fare difference is survivable, because on 28 or 29 December the Kalibo road transfer is the part of the journey most likely to go wrong. Whichever island you choose, travel on the shoulder days if you can: 27 and 28 December move better than the 29th and 30th, and leaving on 2 or 3 January beats fighting the whole country home on the 1st. Set a Philippines What's On alert for the Cebu hotel countdown programmes as they are announced in December, and book in this order: accredited Boracay room or Cebu waterfront hotel first, flights second, day tours last, because the tours are the only part of this trip that can still be arranged when you land.
