The Philippines in December 2026 and January 2027: the longest Christmas, then fiesta season
December in the Philippines is the world's longest Christmas season at full volume: Simbang Gabi, the Metro Manila Film Festival, three Nutcrackers and Disney On Ice. January hands straight over to fiesta season, with Sinulog, Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang on three consecutive weekends. Both months, one plan.
Every country does December. The Philippines does it for a third of the year, and by the time this article covers, the season is at its peak: dawn masses, lanterns the size of houses, a film festival that takes over every cinema in the country. Then, without pausing, January turns into fiesta season, three great street festivals on three weekends in three different cities. Here is how the two months run.
December: Christmas at full volume
Simbang Gabi, 16 to 24 December. The nine dawn masses before Christmas are the heartbeat of the Filipino season. Churches fill from 4am, and the bibingka and puto bumbong stalls outside do the rest. There is nothing to book; there is just an early alarm and a city that treats it as a celebration, not an obligation.
Ligligan Parul, San Fernando, Pampanga. The Giant Lantern Festival is the season's great spectacle, eleven barangays competing with lanterns up to six metres across. The city had not announced the 2026 competition date when we last checked, which is normal for San Fernando and exactly why our Giant Lantern Festival guide exists: it tracks the announcement and the exhibition nights that follow the competition.
The Nutcracker, three ways, 11 to 19 December. Ballet Manila and Ballet Philippines both stage the ballet on the same weekend, 11 to 13 December, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater and The Theatre at Solaire, and the Saint Petersburg National Ballet Theatre brings its production to Newport on 18 and 19 December. Our three Nutcrackers guide compares them.
Disney On Ice: Let's Dance!, Cebu then Manila. The show plays SM Seaside Cebu until 6 December, then moves to the SM Mall of Asia Arena from 18 December to 3 January. For most Filipino families this is the Christmas outing; weekend shows sell first. Event page

The arena month. December's concert calendar is stacked: LE SSERAFIM at MOA Arena on 5 December, NCT 127 on 12 December, and basketball running through everything, with the UAAP finals in early December and the PBA Governors' Cup finals from 16 December. Our finals season guide keeps the three leagues straight.
Metro Manila Film Festival, 25 December to 7 January. From Christmas Day, cinemas nationwide show only the festival's Filipino entries, with ticket prices capped at ₱299 this year. It is the one week when the whole country goes to the movies at once; the Parade of Stars and the awards night bookend it. Event page
New Year's Eve, 31 December. Newport World Resorts stages The Grand Countdown to 2027 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, and our New Year's Eve in Metro Manila guide covers the city's countdown options, from hotel galas to the free fireworks viewpoints.

January: the fiesta triangle
Sinulog, Cebu City, main day Sunday 17 January. The grandest of the January fiestas honours the Santo Niño with a week of processions that builds to the grand parade on the third Sunday. Our Sinulog 2027 guide calls it the January triangle for a reason: Cebu, Kalibo and Iloilo run on consecutive weekends, and the devoted do all three. Book Cebu early; the city fills completely. Ati-Atihan, Kalibo, 15 to 17 January. The original of the Santo Niño festivals, and the rawest: soot-blackened faces, drums that do not stop, and a whole town shouting "Hala Bira!" the same weekend Sinulog peaks. Kalibo is small; rooms go fast, and many visitors base in Boracay or Roxas City and travel in.
Dinagyang, Iloilo City, 22 to 24 January. The triangle's final weekend is the most polished: choreographed ati tribe competitions at the Freedom Grandstand, a fluvial procession, and a city that closes its centre to party. Event page

The Manila counter-programme. If you are staying in the capital, January still delivers: LaLaLa Fest at the Philippine Arena on 14 January, Westlife's 25th anniversary shows at MOA Arena on 20 and 21 January, and Heathers The Musical opening at Solaire on 21 January.
Planning the two months
December rewards booking Manila early and expecting traffic to be part of the experience. January rewards the triangle: fly into Cebu for Sinulog, hop to Kalibo if you have the stamina, and finish in Iloilo, with domestic flights booked before the fiesta prices climb. Set a Philippines What's On alert on the festivals you are watching and we will email you when dates firm up or new shows land.
